Oldest Clean Burn Furnace still in operation?

Check out this Article from Clean Burn:

1981 Clean Burn Unit Still Cranking Out Free Heat

LEOLA, PENN. – Originally purchased by a farmer in Illinois, a 1981 Clean Burn furnace that recycles used motor oil is still working hard after almost 30 years. The unit left the horse farm eight years ago and made its way across country to Joe Bailey Automotive in Utah, where it now recycles more than 4,000 gallons of oil a year.

“I guess you could say this was an early Christmas gift from my brother,” says Joe Bailey, owner of the Salt Lake City automotive repair shop. “He inherited the unit when he bought the farm but didn’t have a use for it so he had a friend drive it to me Thanksgiving weekend in 2002. I didn’t pay a cent for it --- best investment ever!”

The 335,000 BTU furnace is one of the oldest Clean Burn units still operating. Bailey and his employees cleaned up the unit, replaced an old gear-driven piston pump and now use the furnace to heat 2,500-square-feet of space during the winter for the eight-bay garage.

“That furnace is one of the most reliable pieces of equipment I’ve ever seen,” says Bailey. “The oil burns cleanly out the stack and saves me thousands of dollars each year on heating costs. The garage bays are opening and closing all the time, letting in freezing weather. However, it doesn’t matter how cold it gets, the Clean Burn furnace keeps us warm.

“I also like the fact that it helps the environment. Instead of continuously collecting the used motor oil and then paying for it to be hauled away to a recycler, we re-use it right here. This way there’s no chance of spillage during transit. And, we don’t use any other heating source during the winter --- we’re just relying on our recycled heat from a three-decade old unit that we think will last many, many more years.”

Engineered to burn used motor oils generated by cars, trucks, heavy equipment, boats and other vehicles, Clean Burn furnaces and boilers transform used-oil into free heat. More than 80,000 Clean Burn products located throughout the world burn millions of gallons of used-oils each year on-site, at the point of generation. This volume of used-oil would otherwise be transported on highway systems and pose a considerable risk to spills and/or contamination to the environment.

Clean Burn is an ENERGY STAR® partner. The company holds numerous industry certifications and works with the U.S. government, the Environmental Protection Agency and various associations to help coordinate the establishment of standards and regulations related to heat recovery and recycling efforts involving used motor oils.

According to Robert Bennett with Eco Heating Systems, the awareness and use of Clean Burn used-oil heating systems by automotive garage owners and other businesses that generate used-oil is continually growing. "Eco Heating Systems distributes used-oil furnaces and boilers to companies throughout Maryland and Southern Delaware", says Bennett. "While not all units last for 30 years, we are constantly hearing about incredible return-on-investment numbers from satisfied customers. Our clients are utilizing used-oil for immediate economic savings to their companies, while eliminating their cradle to grave liability, and disposing of their used-oil in an environmentally friendly and responsible manner."   For more information on Clean Burn, visit http://www.ecowasteoilheaters.com/ or call 1-866-888-1103.

Celebrate America Recycles Day on November 15th, 2010

America Recycles Day (ARD), celebrated on November 15 every year, is dedicated to encouraging Americans to recycle and to buy recycled products.
The purpose of America Recycles Day is to promote the social, environmental and economic benefits of recycling and to encourage more people to join the movement to create a better natural environment. Since the first America Recycles Day in 1997,  ARD has helped millions of Americans become better informed about the importance of recycling and buying products made from recycled materials.

Click here for Events in your area: http://www.kab.org/site/PageServer?pagename=ARD_Attend

Saving Energy on America Recycles Day  Recycling helps to conserve natural resources and reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming.  According to the EPA, recycling one ton of aluminum cans saves the energy equivalent of 36 barrels of oil or 1,655 gallons of gasoline.   If a ton of cans is a little too much to visualize, consider this: recycling a single aluminum can saves enough energy to power a television for three hours. Yet, every three months, Americans toss enough aluminum into landfills to rebuild the entire U.S. fleet of commercial airplanes, according to the National Recycling Coalition.

About used oil recycling…

Millions of gallons of used oil are dumped every year. Every gallon can pollute over 1 million gallons of drinking water. Used oil that is dumped not only threatens the health of human life, but also plant, marine and wildlife.

The key to reducing the amount of used motor oil being dumped is to make it valuable at the site where it is generated. Businesses that generate used oil make used oil valuable by burning it for heat recovery.

Congress and the U.S. EPA have identified used oil dumping as a major problem. They have recognized the importance of putting used oil to valuable use. The 1980 Used Oil Recycling Act passed by Congress encourages the recycling of used oil on-site for heating. Thousands of small businesses actively use waste oil to produce heat or hot water. The energy recovery means millions of dollars in energy savings for the economy, and cleaner water for our families and the environment.

Used oil is a valuable resource…

Burning your waste oil on-site in a Clean Burn boiler or furnace is an ideal way to participate in recycling and add profits to your business. Small businesses save thousands of dollars a year that would have been spent to purchase virgin fuel oil or other energy sources, such as natural gas or propane.

Constant improvements in Clean Burn’s design of used-oil fired boilers and furnaces have increased efficiency and reduced emissions. All Clean Burn heaters are UL listed and EPA approved. Automatic fuel cutoffs and other safety features in combination with servicing and operational guidelines ensure that our waste oil heaters will function safely, cleanly and efficiently.

How you can help…

By encouraging small businesses to invest in a Clean Burn waste oil heater, you can help prevent millions of gallons of used oil from being transported by used oil haulers.  Or, if you own a small business which generates used oil, consider a Clean Burn waste oil heater as an alternative to having a used oil hauler take your valuable oil.  Used oil has a cradle-to-grave liability and generaters of used oil are responsible for the oil until it is burned or otherwise processed.   The most profitable method of ending cradle-to-grave liability for generators is to recycle it on-site as fuel in a Clean Burn furnace or boiler.  This method requires little handling, and is quick and efficient.

Heating Oil Price Trend for October 21: +6¢

Oil prices bounced back with some force at the NYMEX on Wednesday, recovering most of the ground lost on Tuesday. Wednesday’s rally began with a sinking US dollar, which always supports prices because it makes oil a cheaper investment for investors using foreign currency. But the big price increases followed the weekly report on US petroleum inventories released by the Energy Information Administration released late Wednesday morning. The report showed an increase in crude and gasoline stockpiles, but a 2.2-million-barrel decrease in distillate (a category that includes heating oil, road diesel, and jet fuel) inventories. Traders honed in on this bit of data, interpreting it as a sign of returning oil demand and a possible acceleration of economic recovery. The resulting gains in crude and heating oil prices at the NYMEX brought a significant increase in retail heating oil prices on Thursday. However, market prices were on the decline on Thursday morning in response to negative unemployment data.

Today’s average retail heating oil price in the Northeast is 6 cents higher per gallon than Wednesday’s average price.

How to get help with your Clean Burn furnace or boiler

As we gear up for the heating season, you may start thinking about having your Clean Burn heater cleaned to ensure it is in prime operation condition.  You may call Eco Heating Systems toll free at 1-866-888-1103 to schedule a Periodic Maintenance appointment.  It is important that you have your Clean Burn serviced at least once each year.

When it gets cold, please be assured that Eco Heating Systems is here to serve you.  Our office hours are 8:00 am - 5:00 pm Monday thru Friday, September thru March.

Some of the most common problems with your waste oil heater can include:
1) Running out of oil - It is very important that you maintain the proper amount of waste oil in your tank during the heating season!  Running out of oil is the #1 service problem we encounter.
2) Check for contaminants in the oil - Contaminants in your oil supply will prevent your burner from firing, and could cause major damage to your furnace or boiler.
3) Do not turn off the power to your furnace - Turning off the power to your furnace will cause the preheater block to cool down. If you need to turn down your heat, simply turn down the thermostat until the heat shuts off.
4) Examine and reset primary control - be sure your cad cell wires and jumper wire are properly connected.  (see your operators manual)  To reset the primary control, press the big red button and hold for 3 seconds, then release.

Our service call procedure is as follows:
1) Customer talks to EHS customer service department.  Customer service agent will attempt to identify the problem over the phone.  If this is unsuccessful, we will email or fax the customer a basic Troubleshooting Guide which covers the most common problems that could occur with your waste oil heater.
2) If the customer is unable to resolve the issue using the Troubleshooting checklist, we will have a service technician speak to the customer over the phone to attempt to identify the problem
3) A service appointment will be scheduled for Eco Heating Systems to visit your location to resolve your service problem.

Clean Burn on YouTube!!!

Learn more about Clean Burn waste oil furnaces and boilers:  Check out this video on YouTube.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzUnADYHwWA&feature=related

The Clean Burn Advantage
  • Clean Burn is the market leader with over 50% of the market. In fact, more customers invest in Clean Burns than all other waste oil furnaces combined.
  • Clean Burn products are UL Listed and EPA approved – It is illegal in many states to burn waste oil in a furnace that is not UL Listed. There are several newcomers to the business that do not have these important certifications.
  • Clean Burn furnaces are the only furnaces on the market that are truly designed to burn waste oil. Many competitive furnaces are converted fuel oil systems. This means that the Clean Burn furnace will be more reliable, more economical to run, and will give you a longer lifespan. In addition, it has been designed to be user friendly and easy to maintain.
  • The Clean Burn metering pump uses a Bison gear motor with a capacitor start so that the pump can accurately deliver used oil to the burner at temperatures down to 0 degrees F. Clean Burn can use outside oil tanks and operate under very cold conditions. Many competitive systems use pumps which must be maintained above 50 degrees to operate properly and require inside used oil tanks.
  • Clean Burn furnaces outweigh the competition–more steel is required to build a true waste oil furnace. Our furnaces have a true heat exchanger–not a blast tube design that sends much of the heat up the stack.
  • Clean Burn will only sell furnaces with competent installation and service support. Eco Heating Systems personnel have been installing and servicing Clean Burn furnaces for over 20 years. We have fully staffed and stocked installation and service vehicles, and are ready to assist you with your needs.

Clean Burn Summer Maintenance Specials

Eco Heating Systems is currently offering Summer Maintenance discounts on all Clean Burn waste oil furnaces and boilers.

Last year was a very cold winter, and we have found that our customers really ran their furnaces hard this past heating season.  Just as a car requires periodic maintenance such as oil changes, your Clean Burn furnace also requires regularly scheduled service.

Clean Burn recommends that you have your furnace serviced at least once per year, or about every 700 hours.  Smaller furnaces and furnaces which are constantly being run may require more frequent cleaning, so be sure to keep track of your hour usage!

Your tune up will include:
  • Inspection of the furnace system
  • Clean out of the ash from the furnace
  • Clean the canister filter
  • Remove and block flush the burner
  • Inspection of the metering pump
  • Clean the check valve and screen

Why you should get your waste oil tank cleaned this summer

Spring cleaning is all the rage, but Summer is the best time to get your waste oil storage tank cleaned.  Why?  Because cleaning the tank won't interfere with keeping your shop warm on a cold day!

We recommend you contact your local waste oil hauler to have them empty and clean your tank this summer.  Please make sure your waste oil hauler does a thorough job - it is essential that all of the sludge is removed from the bottom of the tank.
It is also a good idea to establish a waste oil management program for your employees to help them understand the importance of keeping the waste oil supply clean.

Contaminants such as anti-freeze, sludge and water in your waste oil storage tank can all adversely affect the operation of your Clean Burn waste oil heater, or can cause serious and expensive damage.  At the very least, when these items appear in your waste oil supply, you may need to call Eco Heating Systems for a service call to correct the problem.

Keep your Clean Burn happy by getting your waste oil storage tank cleaned early this summer (allowing you time to save up more oil for the heating season) and by keeping contaminants out of your oil supply!
